MUSIC THERAPY REDUCES DEPRESSION IN YOUTH

Researchers at Queen's University Belfast have discovered that music therapy reduces depression in children and adolescents with behavioral and emotional problems.
In the largest ever study of its kind, the researchers in partnership with the Northern Ireland Music Therapy Trust, found that children who received music therapy had significantly improved self-esteem and significantly reduced depression compared with those who received treatment without music therapy.
The study, which was funded by the Big Lottery fund, also found that those who received music therapy had improved communicative and interactive skills, compared to those who received usual care options alone.
251 children and young people were involved in the study which took place between March 2011 and May 2014. They were divided into two groups -- 128 underwent the usual care options, while 123 were assigned to music therapy in addition to usual care. All were being treated for emotional, developmental or behavioral problems. Early findings suggest that the benefits are sustained in the long term.
Professor Sam Porter of the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen's University, who led the study, said: "This study is hugely significant in terms of determining effective treatments for children and young people with behavioral problems and mental health needs."
Dr Valerie Holmes, Centre for Public Health, School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences and co-researcher, added: "This is the largest study ever to be carried out looking at music therapy's ability to help this very vulnerable group, and is further evidence of how Queen's University is advancing knowledge and changing lives."
Ciara Reilly, Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Music Therapy Trust, said: "Music therapy has often been used with children and young people with particular mental health needs, but this is the first time its effectiveness has been shown by a definitive randomized controlled trial in a clinical setting. The findings are dramatic and underscore the need for music therapy to be made available as a mainstream treatment option. For a long time we have relied on anecdotal evidence and small-scale research findings about how well music therapy works. Now we have robust clinical evidence to show its beneficial effects."

BARIATRIC SURGERY MAY WORSEN DEPRESSION FOR SOME

Most obese people feel better after weight-loss surgery but unfortunately, this is not true for some, says a study.
Symptoms of depression worsened for many patients when the levels of depression in patients were measured six to 12 months after they have had bariatric surgery, the findings showed.
For the study, the researchers set out to investigate if depressive symptoms increase markedly or not at all, after post-surgery.
The study involved 107 patients with extreme obesity.
Consistent with previous research, the researchers observed that most people who had undergone this procedure were in much better spirits.
However, in some cases negative mood changes started to creep in between six and 12 months after the operation, with 3.7 percent of patients reporting that they felt discernibly more depressed 12 months post-surgery.

Between six and 12 months after the operation, however, even more patients (13.1 percent) reported increases in depressive symptoms.
These changes went hand-in-hand with significantly lower levels of self-esteem and social functioning.
“The majority of patients whose mood had worsened discernibly experienced these mood changes between six and 12 months post-surgery, suggesting this may be a critical period for early detection and intervention, as needed,” explained Valentina Ivezaj from Yale University School of Medicine in the US.
“The increases in symptoms of depression are also notable given that they were associated with other difficulties including lower self-esteem and social functioning,” Carlos Grilo from Yale University School of Medicine in the US added.
The study appeared in the journal Obesity Surgery.

Depression Caused by Neuropathic Pain

Today's post is the second in a week-long series from 4therapy.com (see link below). It talks about how chronic pain (pain lasting longer than a few weeks)conditions can cause depression and therefore affect all areas of your life. It's advisable to seek help if this happens and not attempt to bottle it up inside, because the spiral of pain and depression can be helped by the right doctors and sensible advice.

Unemployment, Chronic Pain and Depression Can Be Inextricably Connected

A high percentage of individuals develop a depressive illness within six months of becoming unemployed. In fact, after relationship difficulties, unemployment is the most likely thing to push someone into a bad depression. This isn’t surprising, since work is often a significant source of an individual’s sense of worth and self-esteem. When you lose your job you risk going from a position of feeling in control to facing an uncertain future and suffering from an eroded sense of self-confidence--especially if it takes a long time to find another job.

Frequently, depression first shows up in physical symptoms, such as headaches, gastrointestinal distress, and sexual dysfunction. When you're suffering from depression, you and others close to you may notice some of the following changes in your overall affect:

You’re more irritable than usual and may lash out at those who try to offer help;

You’re worrying--even obsessing--about things more than usual;

You're unusually quiet and seem unable to share what's bothering you;

You're sluggish, fatigued, and lack your usual interest in things you usually enjoy.

When you’re in the throes of depression, the shift from your usual way of acting and feeling can make it harder to get another job, putting into play a cycle of defeat and despair that makes your depression deepen. Instead of getting help for their symptoms of depression, too many too frequently try to make themselves feel better by "self medicating" with alcohol or drugs. This clearly makes things worse.

Depression is a serious medical condition that affects your body, mood, and thoughts. Like any illness, depression requires treatment—the sooner the better. While it may take courage to reach out and ask for help, seeking professional treatment will bring the relief you deserve and that you need to get your life headed in a positive direction.

HOMOEOPATHIC REMEDIES FOR DEPRESSION

7 April 2017, WHO is leading a one year global campaign on depression. The goal of the campaign is that more people with depression, everywhere in the world both seek and get help. Depression is a leading cause of ill health and disability world wide.More than 300 million people are now living with depression, an increase of more than 18% between 2005-2015.
Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes you may feel as if life isn't worth living.
More than just a bout of the blues, depression isn't a weakness and you can't simply "snap out" of it. Depression may require long-term treatment. But don't get discouraged. Most people with depression feel better with medication, psychological counseling or both.
Causes-It's not known exactly what causes depression. As with many mental disorders, a variety of factors may be involved, such as:
Biological differences.People with depression appear to have physical changes in their brains. The significance of these changes is still uncertain, but may eventually help pinpoint causes.
Brain chemistry. Neurotransmitters are naturally occurring brain chemicals that likely play a role in depression. Recent research indicates that changes in the function and effect of these neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in maintaining mood stability may play a significant role in depression and its treatment.
Hormones. Changes in the body's balance of hormones may be involved in causing or triggering depression. Hormone changes can result with pregnancy and during the weeks or months after delivery (postpartum) and from thyroid problems, menopause or a number of other conditions.
Inherited traits. Depression is more common in people whose blood relatives also have this condition. Researchers are trying to find genes that may be involved in causing depression.
Symptoms-Although depression may occur only one time during your life, usually people have multiple episodes of depression. During these episodes, symptoms occur most of the day, nearly every day and may include:
·         Feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness or hopelessness
·         Angry outbursts, irritability or frustration, even over small matters
·         Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all normal activities, such as sex, hobbies or sports
·         Sleep disturbances, including insomnia or sleeping too much
·         Tiredness and lack of energy, so even small tasks take extra effort
·         Changes in appetite — often reduced appetite and weight loss, but increased cravings for food and weight gain in some people
  • Anxiety, agitation or restlessness
  • Slowed thinking, speaking or body movements
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt, fixating on past failures or blaming yourself for things that aren't your responsibility
  • Trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions and remembering things
  • Frequent or recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts or suicide
  • Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches
For many people with depression, symptoms usually are severe enough to cause noticeable problems in day-to-day activities, such as work, school, social activities or relationships with others. Other people may feel generally miserable or unhappy without really knowing why.
Depression symptoms in children and teens
Common signs and symptoms of depression in children and teenagers are similar to those of adults, but there can be some differences.
·         In younger children, symptoms of depression may include sadness, irritability, clinginess, worry, aches and pains, refusing to go to school, or being underweight.
·         In teens, symptoms may include sadness, irritability, feeling negative and worthless, anger, poor performance or poor attendance at school, feeling misunderstood and extremely sensitive, using drugs or alcohol, eating or sleeping too much, self-harm, loss of interest in normal activities, and avoidance of social interaction.
Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can demonstrate irritability without sadness or loss of interest. However, major depression can occur with ADHD.
Depression symptoms in older adults
Depression is not a normal part of growing older, and it should never be taken lightly. Unfortunately, depression often goes undiagnosed and untreated in older adults, and they may feel reluctant to seek help. Symptoms of depression may be different or less obvious in older adults, such as:
·         Memory difficulties or personality changes
·         Physical aches or pain
·         Fatigue, loss of appetite, sleep problems, aches or loss of interest in sex — not caused by a medical condition or medication
·         Often wanting to stay at home, rather than going out to socialize or doing new things
·         Suicidal thinking or feelings, especially in older men

ARE CHILDREN WHO PLAY VIOLENT VIDEO GAMES AT GREATER RISK FOR DEPRESSION

While much attention has focused on the link between violent video game playing and aggression among youths, a new study finds significantly increased signs of depression among preteens with high daily exposure to violent video games. The details and implications of this important new study are described in Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers

Susan R. Tortolero, PhD and coauthors from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health, RAND Corporation (Santa Monica, CA), The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Atlanta, GA), and Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School (Boston, MA) recorded significantly more depressive symptoms over the course of a year among fifth-graders from three U.S. cities who reported playing high-violence video games for 2 or more hours a day, compared to those who reported playing low-violence video games for less than 2 hours a day. This association was consistent across all racial/ethnic subgroups and among boys, according to the study results presented in the article "Daily Violent Video Game Playing and Depression in Preadolescent Youth."
"One of the strengths of this study is its large and ethnically diverse sample," says Editor-in-Chief Brenda K. Wiederhold, PhD, MBA, BCB, BCN, Interactive Media Institute, San Diego, California and Virtual Reality Medical Institute, Brussels, Belgium
