N Is For Neuropathy A Personal Story
Today's post from http://frecklesandapinktiara.wordpress.com (see link below) is a personal account of having neuropathy as a result of lupus. There will be things in this article which will strike a cord with most neuropathy sufferers and it always helps to read about how other people are dealing with the problem. If you're experiencing the same symptoms, you should talk to your doctor about the possibility of having neuropathy alongside your original illness.
“N” IS FOR NEUROPATHY, PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY
April 16, 2013 · by Monique in Blogging from A-Z April 2013 Challenge,
Last night while PJ and I were putting everything away so we could settle into bed, I irritated the crap out him. In the process of trying to move my pill cups, I dropped them, sending my meds into a hundred different directions. Then I tried to grab one of my cups, which are the acrylic cups with lids and acrylic straws that don’t fall out for this very reason, and dropped it too. Since it’s essentially a sippy cup for grown ups, only a few drops came out. Since I have some mobility issues, I have a Winnie the Pooh crib organizer hanging on my wall next to the bed. I keep things like my hair brush, lotion, deodorant, facial moisturizer, headbands…things like that in it. Well, as I was trying to put my brush up I missed the pocket and dropped it onto the night stand right where Prince Charming had just put the laptop, and he told me to stop helping. lol
Now, from the outside looking in, you’d think my name was Grace. That’s the problem with an invisible illness though, nothing is what it seems from the outside looking in. Because even though I have been touched with klutz stick, what was going on was Peripheral Neuropathy.
A few years back, I started getting this really odd feeling in my hands and feet. It was almost like they fell asleep, but it also felt like my hands and feet had swollen to the point of stretching my skin. They felt very slick to me. I chalked it up to another attempt by Lupus to try and make me look completely crazy. Over the course of the next year or so, those sensations would happen more and more. After a while, the tingling sensation started to precede these very strange feelings that I can only describe as an electric like buzzing bolt that would shoot down my arms. The first time it happened, it happened in my left arm only, about 6 months after a heart attack {oddly enough that was 3 years and; 2 days ago…seems like a lifetime ago though} and I was terrified that I was having another one. After a visit to the E.R, I had yet one more new medical diagnosis to add to my collection, Peripheral Neuropathy.
Peripheral Neuropathy is a condition resulting from damage or disease to the peripheral nerves-the motor, sensory and autonomic nerves-that connect to the spinal cord to muscles, skin and internal organs. The causes can range from Diabetes, an unbalanced diet, heredity, and you guessed it…autoimmune diseases, especially systemic ones.
As it has progressed, the sensations have evolved. I don’t get the tingling as often anymore, but the recurrence of my hands feeling slick has increased. It got harder and harder to turn a door knob, or open things when it required grip. And about 6 months ago I started dropping things a lot, and even though I was using my walker I started falling again. I couldn’t understand it. It was like the air was tripping me and gravity went into hyper mode to pull things out of my hands.
And then I found out that if your sensory nerves become damaged that slick feeling in your hands and feet prevent you from being able to tell that you don’t have your feet firmly planted or that you don’t have a good grip on things you’re holding even if you feel like you do. Which meant that neither the air or gravity had it out for me.
Since Peripheral Neuropathy is unique to each person, and the sensations are so odd, it’s easy to over look the signs and even easier for people to look at you like you grew a second head right there in front of them when you’re trying to describe the symptoms. But because there are some treatment options that might be available to you, you need to talk to your doctor as soon as you start to experience any of the symptoms to help prevent any further damage or possibly a cure.
If you have a Facebook account, tomorrow The Neuropathy Association is hosting a Facebook chat, “Advances in Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy Research” on their Facebook Page, starting at 7 pm Eastern time.

Corns
Corns
Intrinsic factors
2) Faulty gait i.e. walking foot mechanism
3) Deformed toes
Hammer toes – it is an abnormal second toe which overrides on the big toe. This overriding elevates the joint, which often rub with shoes and become the commonest site for formation of corn.
Occupational – Any continuous pressure which arises during occupation will mark in the body as corns
Athletes suffer from constant friction and trauma
Guitar players’ fingertips are common sites of callosities due to playing sharp strings frequently
Abnormality of gait – Due to
Surgery done in the lower extremities
Due to pain while walking
Walking down a hill
Standing on a hard surface for a long time
On the sole, over the metatarsal arch – the ball of the foot
On the outside border of the fifth toe, where it rubs against the shoe
Between the 4th and 5th toe, since both of them often rub with each other in a slanting manner
Pain and swelling in and around the corn
Sensation of walking on pebbles
Discomfort and pain with direct pressure, since root gets pressed
Soft corn – A soft corn is a small, inflamed patch of skin with a smooth centre. It is found commonly in between the fourth and fifth toe. Soft corn results from the absorption of moisture due to sweat, and it is noticed by its white, macerated boggy appearance. Women are more prone to this type of corn, since they work more in water. Perspiration also causes soft corns to break down and become extremely tender. They don’t appear at sites of pressure points. It becomes an extremely painful lesion when the opposing toe moves against it, causing friction.
Hard corns usually occur over the bony part, on the lateral aspect of the fifth toe. They are hard to touch and may feel like a small stone in the shoe while walking. Though always found single, it may be found in several different areas on the same foot. The hard corn is the most common type and it has a hard central core. This central core distinguishes it from warts. The major points to differentiate it from warts are, they do not have roots and they are contagious. Palpation of the lesion can also help to differentiate the plantar wart from the corn. Corns are more sensitive to direct pressure, while a plantar wart is more sensitive on lateral compression of the lesion. Warts are a dry crusty surface lesion which appears in clusters.
For prevention,
Shoes for a while, or avoid hard leather-bottom shoes
High heels
Wear -
Gloves during work to avoid frictions
Shoes with soft cushioned soles
Don’t -
Use acids, it may damage surrounding normal tissues also
Do’s -Cushioning to reduce the amount of mechanical irritation on the site of the corn formation
Soak feet or hands in warm water for sometime to make it soften
Hypersensitivity
Poor circulatory disorders
Autoimmune disorders
Peripheral neuralgic disorders
Complications
Bursitis – infection of sheath which avoids friction while moving the joint. Here you will get sudden sharp pain that spreads quickly in palm and soles.
Development of an ulcer occurs when infected with bacteria or fungus. It is common in diabetic patients.

Neuropathy An Honest Approach
Today's post from kyle-seo-service.blogspot.com (see link below) is a short but honest appraisal of neuropathy and how it impacts the patient. Not exactly going to cheer you up but may help you come to terms with what is happening to you. Doctors are notorious for sweetening the pill so to speak but what you really need is to know the truth, what the future holds and what, if anything you can do about it. Only then can you try to take a positive attitude to making the best of your situation.
Neuropathy – Developing Your Treatment Methodology
By Kyle, August 31 2012Nerve damage is a very serious illness that needs careful consideration on your treatment methodology. Sadly there is no known cure for neuropathy mainly since most damage to the nerves is permanent. Patients suffering from neuropathy must be aware of his condition. He should learn to manage the symptoms and improve his quality of life, since nerve damage is always new and fresh, the patient should develop his medical treatment together with his physician. They should plan on the treatment method that may sometimes cure the patient or worse there will be no effect at all.
Nerve damage is always fresh means that every case of neuropathy is unique to the other, there is no similarity. This is why developing a cure and treatment is very hard because of its uniqueness and variety of symptoms and effect. The patient and physician must be able to slowly counter the symptoms to improve quality of life. Damages in the nerve sometimes cause paralysis or improper motor movement, this is very damaging to the patient not only physically but emotionally as well. Emotional damage is equally painful as physical damage, thus bad emotions will further increase the damage and therefore bad emotions should be prevented.
A patient suffering from nerve damage must be prepared for what is coming, the patient should literally accept the fact that his condition may remain forever. Treatments brought about by different clinics only lessens the symptoms but never really cure the disease. This may be a painful truth that a patient should accept, the patient should spend more time with his family to bring them closer and it may lessen the physical and emotional pain.
The patient must develop a healthy communication with his clinician, he should report changes and neuropathy symptoms that are affecting his mobility and recovery. Even the most nonsense things should be shared to the clinician for it might bring great changes to the treatment procedure. The slightest feeling of ease and recovery is enough to boost the patient’s will to live. Knowing that there is recovery will bring a good aura to the patient. A patient with a positive character is always saved.

CBD Cannabidiol Oil A Major Breakthrough In The Struggle Against Nerve Pain
Today's post from peoplespharmacy.com (see link below) illustrates just how far we've come in finding solutions for neuropathic pain. Who would have thought ten years ago that marijuana and its derivatives would be able to play a major role in reducing severe pain (and...just as important, be sanctioned by the authorities because it helps in the current and over-hyped: 'war on opioids'). I can actually speak from personal experience regarding cannabis oil (CBD oil). I never expected it and was roundly skeptical but after a few days of 2 drops under the tongue, twice a day, my symptoms also reduced significantly. Now here I need to add a disclaimer:- my experience and the experience of those mentioned in the article, have absolutely no bearing on how you may react. As you probably know, neuropathy is a disease that is peculiar to each individual and each individual reacts differently to different treatments. Why do you think doctors are scratching their heads in frustration at not being able to provide a 'cure' or often, even help with the symptoms. There are over 100 sorts of nerve damage and over 100 causes - add that to over 100 potential treatments and you have one of the most frustrating and serious diseases on earth. This blog is aimed at providing information about as many options as possible but you still need to seek advice from your doctors and do your own research. An article such as this one below, needs to be looked at objectively and not jumped upon as being the 'elixir of life'. But you know all this don't you!
Cannabidiol Oil Solved Severe Seizure Problem and Painful Neuropathy Joe Graedon December 5, 2016 Diabetic Neuropathy (nerve pain)
Medical marijuana is now legal in many states but many people are unaware of the pros and cons. Does cannabidiol oil work for hard-to-treat pain and epilepsy?
Many doctors are skeptical about the benefits of medical marijuana. That’s because they did not learn about this “herb” in medical school. If it was discussed at all, the likelihood is that the lecture would have been part of a class on drugs of abuse rather than therapeutic benefits. Sadly, there has been relatively little research on medical marijuana. This reader shares a poignant story about cannabidiol oil.
Q. My 19-year-old son had intractable seizures starting at age 12. At age 17, he was up to 9 seizures a day despite taking three different meds (29 pills a day). The side effects were awful; he got so skinny that the doctors considered inserting a feeding tube.
Two years ago, I started him on cannabidiol oil (CBD). In California, you go to a special doctor who asks lots of questions to decide if you’d benefit from it. You get a special card for a dispensary.
We had to experiment to see how much he needed. We were able to gradually decrease his pills.
His neurologist was horrified at the idea two years ago, but he has watched in amazement as my son reduced his medication without a single seizure. CBD has made a world of difference in my son’s life!
A. Many states have approved the medical use of marijuana compounds. Cannabidiol oil does not cause the high associated with marijuana. Research is beginning to show benefit for some people with hard-to-treat epilepsy (Pharmacological Research, May, 2016).
A study in the journal Frontiers in Pharmacology (Sept. 30, 2016) also reported improvement:
“Novel antiepileptic compounds with new mechanisms of action, fewer side effects, and better safety and tolerability profiles have been approved over the last years. However, although more than 20 different drugs approved for the treatment of epilepsy exist today, around 30% of patients continue to have seizures…
“The medicinal effects of cannabis in epilepsy have been known for centuries and, nowadays, the anticonvulsant properties of its components have received increasing attention…
“The present report is in line with pre-clinical and preliminary clinical data suggesting that CBD may be effective for some patients with epilepsy.”
These researchers call for randomized controlled trials. We couldn’t agree more!
Stories from Readers About Cannabidiol Oil:
Ellie in Connecticut:
“Were it not for medical marijuana, I’d be taking opioids regularly to deal with my chronic pain. The world of med MJ is indeed a whole new world.
“Initially I stuck very closely to only oil based tincture strains that were very high CBD, with virtually no THC (the pyschoactive element in MJ that gets people high). Now I’m realizing that a small amount of THC along with high CBD produces the pain relief I’ve been looking for.
“Yes, I had to literally jump through hoops to become certified to purchase medical MJ in my state but it’s all been very worthwhile. Does the marijuana totally eliminate my pain? No, it doesn’t. But what it does is ease it back to a far more manageable level. I’m delighted to have this option to control my pain.”
David reports:
“My wife experiences relief from stroke related pain with oral CBD oil: an eye dropper full under the tongue when stomach is empty. She has experienced no adverse effects. It has a pleasant taste. CBD oil is derived from non-THC hemp and doesn’t get people high.”
Brian in California reports on cannabidiol for diabetic neuropathy:
“My diabetic neuropathy came on suddenly and without warning. The severity is such that I’ll literally scream out, even in a public place like a restaurant! The pain is very sharp but only lasts about a second. Sometimes it pulses. I’ve even been prescribed narcotics (opioids) but they don’t even touch it. Neurontin (gabapentin) doesn’t work, even after taking it for months.
“When I tried Marijuana it worked immediately and the relief lasted 3-4 days!
“Now, I make my own tincture and take about two dropperfuls every three days or so. If I forget, the pain will return to remind me, but if I have the tincture handy, it takes care of it immediately with NO side effects. I’m sure it is high in CBD but it also has some THC in it and I think a bit of THC is necessary for this purpose.
“I’m a retired Chiropractor with an additional degree in Natural Medicine. The synergy of the two substances working together is very important in natural products.”
A Doctor’s Perspective on Medical Marijuana:
If you would like to learn more about one physician’s experience with medical marijuana, we recommend our one-hour radio interview with David Casarett, MD, MA. In it you will learn about the use of cannabidiol oil and medical marijuana to treat neuropathic (nerve) pain. Dr. Casarett also explains how medical marijuana may be helpful in calming the agitation experienced by some patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Here is a link to the show.

Role of Postnatal Exercise After Pregnancy
AIMS OF PHYSIOTHERAPY MANAGEMENT
Electrotherapy for lower pelvic pain, perineal pain, musculoskeletal discomfort , pain arising because of circulatory problems and incontinence.
Manual therapy for musculoskeletal dysfunction.
The important ones are pelvic floor exercises, which you might start soon after delivery. These exercises lessen the possibility of lasting stress incontinence and help to ease lower pelvic pain . Besides they firm up the muscles from the vagina to make sexual activity more pleasurable.
Abdominal exercises to improve tone of muscle.
Establishing Breast feeding.
Advice with regard to everyday functional activities for example baby bathing, lifting or carrying, cot or pram heights etc.
Posture correction and ergonomic advice.
Relaxation exercises to lessen tension and maternal fatigue.
Psychological counselling.
STRENGTHENING THE ABDOMINAL MUSCLES
Immediately following the birth, the musles are slack, and intra-abdominal pressure is reduced. The ladies is concerned about 5 months pregnant. Using the help of postnatal exercises ,Abdominal muscles might take 6 weeks to return to the pre- pregnant state. Diastasis from the rectus abdominis, women lies in crook lying using the lumber spine flattened and also the head is lifted to create an abdominal contraction. Strengthening exercises are:
Crook lying, Pelvic tilting.
Crook lying, tighten the stomach muscles, lift head and shoulder minimizing slowly.
Half crook lying, hip hitching along the side of the straight leg.
To work the hip extensors which help to keep the backward/ forward pelvic tilt.
Prone lying, alternate leg raising and lowering.
Prone lying, tighten the buttocks, hold for count 10 and rest.
The stomach muscles should be contracted released slowly in the beginning and jerking must be avoided.
POSTNATAL EXERCISES
Postnatal exercises are essential for you to regain the effectiveness of your abdominal muscles, following the birth of your baby as strong muscles help prevent back injury, prevent abdominal organs from " dropping forward" through insufficient support and help you to definitely regain a flat stomach. You'll find your pelvic floor muscles by stopping and starting the flow of urine whenever you urinate. The squeezing that stops the flow of urine would be the pelvic floor muscles contracting. Now try contracting and relaxing your Kegel muscles while sitting at the desk, driving inside your car and watching television! Aim for an objective of 100 Kegels every day.
Almost ever women experience trouble bringing their abdomen to its original tone and size after childbirth. Postnatal exercises, a mix of Kegel and abdominal exercises works. This change in a most women's bodies is a result of the laxity of the abdominal muscle wall. You should remember that your body has simply changed, and never necessarily for the worse. Post natal exercises can help your abdomen go back to its original size.
The pelvic floor is really a "sling" of muscles that supports your organs, e.g. your uterus, bladder and kidneys. To help keep the pelvic floor (also known as the Kegel muscles) strong, you have to exercise them.
Women commonly experience muscle and pain and post pregnancy pain listed here are contributing factors:
Weakness of the lower abdominal both in vaginal and caesarian deliveries.
Long periods spent sitting while feeding the infant can contribute to tightness within the upper body.
The presence of the hormone relaxin within the weeks post delivery whilst breast feeding loosens ligaments that are then more prone to spains and strains.
In case your muscles are weak, focus on the regaining the strength by performing "Pelvic tilt" prior to trying anything harder.
Pelvic Tilt-: Lie lying on your back, knee bent up and feet flat on the ground. Place hands on your stomach to be able to feel the tightening muscles. Gently tighten your ab muscles and push the arch of the back towards the floor. Squeeze your bottom tight. Contain the position till the count of 6, after which relax.
Elbow to Knee lifts-: Gently bring one knee as well as your opposite elbow together. Then bring your other elbow and knee together. Build up to 20 rep, altering sides.
Ab Crunch-: Lie lying on your back with your knees bent, feet on the ground and ankles pressing recorded on the floor. Hold both hands behind you head after which raise your head while you contract your ab muscles. Breathe properly and build up to 10 rep.
Sit-Ups-: Lie lying on your back with your knee bent and hands alongside your face. Sit up and touch you knee. Swing both hands up into the air repeat a minimum of 10 times.
Elbow towards the Floor-: Sit on the floor, knee bent and hands together right in front. Slowly lean backwards, pressing each elbow for the floor. Repeat 2 one both sides, and gradually work to your starting position. Repeat the entire sequence, working as much as 10 repetitions.
Reach your toes-: Lie on the ground with your hands just above shoulders and bend your hips which means that your legs are vertical and crossed at the ankle. For a beginner, you are able to bend your legs in the knees.Lift your head and shoulders started, gently reach up towards your toes and go back to the starting position. Build up to 12 repetitions.
Stomach Tightener-: Lie on the ground, knees bent and arms sitting on your thighs.Lift up slowly, sliding both hands up your thighs towards the knees. Breathe out as you lift up. Build up to at least 12 repetitions.
Bi-cycling on Elbows-: Lie in your elbows and keep your back on the floor. Now tighten your ab muscles and alternatively kick your legs in front of you. Repeat Ten times on each leg.
Leg Stretch: Lie flat on the ground and hold the knees towards your chest. Place both hands just below your knee for support. Raise your other leg started at 45 degree angle, pushing your back to the floor. You are able to leave your head on the ground or lift your head and shoulder started, as your stomach muscles become stronger. Change legs. Repeat Ten times alternating legs.
Elbow to opposite knee-: Lie lying on your back, knee bent near to the chest, arms behind head and elbows touching the ground. Straighten right leg forward, slightly started. Lift head, touch opposite elbow to left knee. Repeat on opposite side. Working as much as 15 repetitions.
They are some of best post-natal exercises. As pregnancy and childbirth can weaken the pelvic floor muscles which support your bladder, it is crucial that you make Kegel a part of your exercise routine routine. Postnatal exercises strengthens muscles that contain the bladder and many other organs in position.
PHYSIOTHERAPY FOLLOWING CAESAREAN SECTION
First day postnatal exercises:
Breathing exercises.
Huffing having a pillow held within the wound.
Foot and leg exercises are carried out to assist circulation.
Teach mother how you can move about and to roll to the side for getting in and up out of bed.
Feeding the baby in the bed- possess a pillow under the thighs to avoid sliding down as well as an extra pillow underneath the knee on the side of feeding.
Second day postnatal exercises:
Add pelvic floor exercises.
Straight abdominal exercises.
Pelvic tilting.
Continue breathing exercises.
Standing, stretch tall,tighten buttocks.
Walk tall to avoid backache.
Subsquent days:
Progress postnatal exercises across the same lines as for the vaginal delivery.
Stitches are usually out by 7 days.
Abdominal contractions are important to maintain mobility from the healing tissue in addition to increasing circulation to advertise healing.

Seven Super Supplements For Nerve Health
Today's post from drperlmutter.com (see link below) is one for those of us with neuropathy and a fairly healthy wallet! I often think that supplement recommendations are a bit of a luxury for a select few because they're not cheap and many people's budgets just can't stretch to extras that may or may not work. That said, if it's possible financially, you may want to take a look at some of these seven recommendations here. They are all widely reported as having benefits for a health nervous system (apart from other beneficial health areas which you could see as a bonus) and the list and explanations could be very useful as a base from which to start, especially if your normal diet isn't the healthiest on the block. Unfortunately, supplement takers are often the people who are most conscious about their overall health and as such may not need them as much as others. If you do your research on the web, you'll see that each of these seven is claimed to be helpful for neuropathy patients but if you're at all concerned, talk to your doctor. Please watch out for supplements that claim to solve everything in one pill though - they are exorbitantly expensive and their claims are often wildly exaggerated - shopping for individual elements will work out cheaper in the end and then you know what you're putting in your mouth.
Dr. Perlmutter
A brain-healthy, Alzheimer’s-fighting diet has properties that extend far beyond just decreasing your daily carb load. To truly provide your body with brain-boosting nutrients and vitamins that help stave off brain disease and other illnesses, you should consider a regular regimen of supplements. These seven supplements will go a long way towards helping you with prevention:
DHA: An omega-3 fatty acid that represents more than 50% of the omega-3 fatty acids in the brain. Numerous studies link high levels of DHA with a decreased risk for dementia, Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases (view some of these studies here on my site). Look to take in about 1,000mg/day.
Resveratrol: If you like that red wine is permissible in the Grain Brain lifestyle, then you can thank this natural compound which slows down the aging process, boosts blood flow to the brain, and promotes heart health. In addition to the role it plays in stimulating brain function, resveratrol is also a key ally of our body’s immune system. Target 100mg twice daily.
Turmeric: If you follow me on social media (Facebook, Twitter), then you’ve heard me talk about turmeric before. Turmeric is well known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. We can thank turmeric for protecting our mitochondria (thanks to its role in stimulating antioxidant properties), and it also improves glucose metabolism — both of which are essential for reducing one’s risk for brain disease. Try to get 350 mg twice daily.
Probiotics: Research conducted in just the last few years has started to conclude that eating food rich in probiotics can influence brain behavior, and may modulate the effects of stress, anxiety, and depression. In Grain Brain, I dive deeper into the relationship between probiotics and brain health, and today’s researchers are further exploring the role gut bacteria may play in maladies ranging from chronic pain to autism. Ideally, get your probiotics through a supplement that contains at least 10 billion active cultures from at least ten different strains, including lactobaccilus acidophilus and bifidobacterium.
Coconut Oil: If you follow this blog, you know I am a big fan of coconut oil and probably know why it’s an important part of our diet. It’s even a part of my anti-Alzheimer’s trio! Go for at least 1-2 tablespoons of an organic variety daily.
Alpha-lipoic Acid: Alpha-lipoic acid is a powerful antioxidant that works to protect brain and nerve tissue. Look to get 600 mg/day.
Vitamin D: I can’t say enough about the importance of Vitamin D, and that’s why I devote five pages to it in Grain Brain. To learn more, watch my video on the subject. It’s ideal to start with 5,000 units of Vitamin D3 daily, get tested after three months, and adjust accordingly.
As with any dietary/health changes, these are suggested guidelines only, and you should consult with your physician before making any changes to, or beginning, a supplement plan.
